ROAD BOARDS.

GUST. The Board met on the 13, th September. All the members present. Correspondence was read from the Provincial Treasurer, enclosing a cheque on the Bank of Australasia for the sura of £1 19s Id, being the amount allocated on 'finally adjusting the Road Board grant under |the Payment to Provinces Act. From the Secretary for Publ c Works re fencing between rural section 4091 and reserves 741 and 1 742, informing the Board that the Steward of Reserves has been requested to make arrangements. From the same re planting reserves, stating that a sum sufficient for planting fifty acres can be allotted to the district. Mr J, Prowse waited on the Board, asking them to put in pipes

o gi drain in Tallott’s road, as the sides were falling iu andjjblocking back the water on his land. Resolved that gorse be put in the drain. Mr Prowse’s offerj|to do the work for £2, was accepted. Mr Dobbs waited upon the Board with reference to a crossing to his land, as the cutting on the newly formed road has deprived him of an entrance. [t was decided that a frame culvert be put over the channel opposite his gate. Messrs Ladbrook and Zouch waited upon the Board, asking the Board to help them to get an outlet for the water from off their land. It was decided that Messrs Higgins and Dickinson meet on the laud and see what can be done in the matter. Tenders were opened for forming road by Free’s. All were rejected as being excessive; also, for cutting a drain on Morrison’s and Free’s land, and that of W. Atkinson’s accepted. Mr H. S. Kennedy waited upon the Board, asking if they intended doing anything to the road by Bennett’s. The chairman stated that they were willing to pay the half cost of the work, and had communicated with the Oxford Road Board, but at that time the Oxford Road Board were unwilling to carry out the works or pay their halt, so that the thing lapsed. £t was resolved—- “ That the clerk write to the Oxford Road Board, and ask if they are willing to pay their half, and if so, the Oust Board are willing to carry out the work and pay half the cost.’’-The clerk was directed to call for tenders for forming road near Mr Tipping’s from the Gust bridge; and to write to the contractor for the cuttings on Tallott’s road, and request him to go on with the work ; again to see to bridge at Houson’s, and get it repaired ; to write to the Rangiora and Mandeville Road Board, and ask if they are willing to bear half the cost of two bridges over the Gust on the boundary road; to get the place near Digavan’s put in repair; and to write to the Secretary for Public Works, asking the Government to make a drain reserve near the River Ashley. It was resolved—“ That the land on which the Board office is built be levelled.” The clerk was further directed to write to the Provincial Government, calling attention to the fact that owing to the rise in the tariff on the Oxford and Rangiora railway, a considerable number of waggons and drays are now on the road carting timber from Oxford, and it is estimated that it will thereby cause an extra expenditure of £350 per annum for maintenance of the main road in the Gust district. Last year the Board expended £834 on the maintenance of their part of the same road. Accounts to the amount of £240 11s lid were passed for payment, and the Board then adjourned. UPPER ASHBURTON. A meeting of this Board took place at Westerfield, on Thursday, 9th, when all the members were present, with the exception of Mr McLean. It was decided that last meeting was invalid, owing to all the members not having notice. Mr Charles Reed was voted chairman for the current year. Resolved —“That R. D. Pullars appointment as clerk and overseer, at two hundred pounds per annum, be confirmed; his engagement to commence from the 27th August last, and to exist for three months certain.” Resolved—* “That as soon as funds are at the Board’s disposal, they are to be placed to the credit of the Board at the Bank of New Zealand, Ashburton.” Resolved—“ That the chairman’s application to the Government for a reserve of fifty acres for offices, paddocks, &c, for the use of the Board, be confirmed ; and also his application for reserve on the North bank of the Norlh branch of the river Ashburton.” Resolved “That Messrs Foots and Son’s tender for the supply of a map, valuation, and ratepayers’ roll of the district, be accepted.” Resolved—“ That the chairman’s order for stationery, &c, be confirmed, ” Resolved—“ That the chairman be appointed treasurer of the Board, and that all cheques be signed by him and countersigned by one other member.” Mr' Miller gave notice that he would move at the next meeting of the Board thatthe district be divided into Wards. The overseer’s report was read, giving a rough estimate of the various works required to be done, and the cost of same ; also, the probable amount of expenditure for one year, amounting in all to £1917105. The following correspondence was read:—Fromthe Secretary for Public Works, in reference to Black’s road, through sections 9240 and 10972, Resolved—“ That the Board cannot recommend that the above road be fenced at the public expense, the public not having sufficient interest in the same, and that the ; chairman reply to the Secretary for Public Works to that effect.” From the ProvincialSecretary, acknowledging receipt of letter apprising the Government Of the election of the members of the Board. From the Secretary for Public Works, re reserve of fifty acres applied for by the Board for offices, paddocks, &c. From Messrs Fooks and Son, relative to ratepayers’ roll. From Mr A. McColl, asking the Board to fence the north approach to the Rangitata Bridge, and further to make the new road to Shepherd’s Bush. Resolved—“ That in reply to Mr McColl’s letter he be informed that the Board cannot at the present enter upon any works, as they are without funds. From Mr Isaac Sargent, asking the Board to give him the privilege of feneingin gravel reserve at the corner of his own land, Resolved—“ That Mr Sargeant’s application for the gravel reserve at the corner of his section be accepted, at an annual rental of one shilling per acre, subject to the same being given np to the Board when required, and free access to be given at all times to contractors or others authorised by the Board.” T e chairman was requested to write to the Provincial Secretary, stating the result of the deputation to the Ashburton Board. The Board then ballotted who were to go out of office at the end of the current year, when it fell to the lot of Messrs Reed and Church to retire. It was resolved—- “ That the Board shall meet on the first Wednesday of every month.” The Board then adjourned.
