MAGISTRATES’ COURTS.
CHEISTCHURCH. Tuesday, June 27. (Before G. L. Hellish, Esq, E.M.) Drunk. —For being drunk and disorderly, one inebriate was fined 10s. James Arklie, for being drunk, was fined 10s. James Walls, for being drunk and disorderly, was fined 10s. Assault. —H. McOlatchie was charged with violently assaulting Louisa Spence. A witness was called to prove that there was a disturbance. As the charge was not pressed by the female, the Bench fined him 10s, and witness’s expenses. Illegally on the Premises.— Thomas Sutherland was charged with being illegally on the premises of Samuel Clark, Windmill road, was fined 10s, and witness’s expenses. Vagrancy, —Thomas Foster, on remand, was brought up charged with vagrancy. Evidence was called to prove that prisoner had been going from house to house with a petition purporting to be for a widow and several children. He had obtained several sums of money from different individuals on that and other pretexts. Detective Neil proved to arresting the prisoner who, in reply to the charge, said he never went collecting subscriptions. He had only inquired for work several times. The detective further stated that he had made inquiries, and could find no such person as mentioned in the prisoner’s subscription list. The Bench, remarking on the enormity of the offence, sentenced him to twelve months’ imprisonment with hard labour. Uttering a Valueless Cheque —E, J. N. Taylor was charged with uttering a valueless cheque. Evidence was called to show that prisoner presented a cheque to Mrs Pope in payment of goods to the amount of 3s 3d, receiving the change, and that it was presented for payment at the bank and refused, the answer being “no account.” Detective Neil, called, deposed that he had presented the cheque at all the banks, and payment had been refused. Prisoner admitted the charge, and the case (was therefore dealt with summarily, and the prisoner received six months’ imprisonment with hard labour. lyttelton! Tuesday, June 27. (Before F. D.
