At a banquet given by the Lord Mayor, Lord Beaconsfield said that the Government policy aimed at the maintenance of peace, and amelioration of the Christians in Turkey and the provinces, while upholding the integrity and indebtedness of Turkey by the observance of the Treaty of Paris, The Government had proposed a conference on the position of Eastern affairs, which would be accepted by the great Powers interested. He said that the policy of England was especially one of peace, though no nation is more prepared for war if the liberty or existence of the Empire was menaced. A despatch from Lord Derby to the British Ambassador at St Petersburg reviews the action of the English Government, and confirms a previous despatch of the 2nd October, in which Lord Derby refused to concur in the proposal of the Vienna note, and said the . atrocity had caused great agitation, but that the feeling in England would change at once if it was believed that the integrity of Stamboul was menaced by Russia. November 11. The Emperor Alexander, in a speech at Moscow, said—“l wish the conference to agree on a settlement of the Eastern question, but if I cannot obtain rightful guarantees, I am determined to act independently, and I am sure the whole of Russia will respond to my summons. ” THE PRESIDENT’S ELECTION. There is intense excitement in America over the President’s election, as later returns render the election of Mr Tilden doubtful. COMMERCIAL. The wool market is stronger, and prices still advancing. There has been a recovery of 2d to 3d, bringing the rates up to those of last February sales. Wheat dearer; New Zealand 48s to 50s. THE MAIL. Tlfe Australian mails via San Francisco were delivered in London on the 7th of November. THE SAN FRANCISCO SBRYICB. Sydney, November 21, The Premier, in a speech yesternight at Queanbeyan, regarding the Pacific service, contradicted the published statements that there was no likelihood of any arrangement being made between this Government and that of New Zealand, and the contractors. Although there were some differences between the two Governments, it was fully believed that they would be removed, and New Zealand would meet us fairly, so as to preserve the service. INTERPROVINCIAL. Auckland, November 21. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency report confirms the advices re the advance in the price of wool. Under date November 4th, the report says The competition of both home and foreign buyers is active, and the continental markets are lightly stocked, The sales comprise about 200,000 bales ; 9300 have been sent to the manufacturing districts direct. Wellington, November 21. Mr Upton resumed in the case Dyson v. Dyson, and after the merits of the case were gone into, the Bench considered the case established, and granted a decree nisi, on the usual terms, the technical point raised daring the case not particularly affecting that case more than the general practice. Their Honors reserved argument upon the point till next day. Napier, Nov 22, A complimentary dinner is to be given to Mr Ormond to-morrow evening at the Criterion Hotel; The committee is a large and influential one, and the affair is expected to be a great success, Geeymouth, November 22.
The Golden Fleece Extended Company cleared up for six weeks, the result being 1870 ounces of melted gold, value £7199; which, with the undivided balance from former crushings, leaves £10,700 to the credit of the company, A dividend of 4s per 48,000 scrip, equal to £9600, will be declared, and £llOO will be carried forward. Dunedin, November 22.
The inquiry into the alleged ill-treatment of a girl at the Industrial Home, commences to-day. A salmon trout, twelve pounds in weight, was caught yesterday, Mr Charles Bright, lecturer, returns in three weeks to Dunedin. The sum of £IOO has been collected for the All England Eleven match. From an analysis published in the papers there were 296 invitations to the Convention; 125 attended, 29 regretted inability, 31 refused, and 101 made no reply. Three men have been drowned at Stewart’s Island by a boat accident—viz, Patrick Connell, John King, Little Jockey.
