HARBOR BOARD
The usual meeting of the above was held on Tuesday evening. Present: I he Chairman and Messrs Chambers, Matthewson, Clark, Townlev, Murphy, Dickson, Tucker, and Gannon. CLAIM FOB DAMAGES.
Captain Wiig, of the cutter Leo claimed £2 7s 6d, for damages sustained by his vessel when it was lying alongside the breakwater, the damages being attributed to the carelessness°of the Harbor Board employees in not stopping the crane in time, when re quested to do so.
Captain Bennett, Harbormaster, said he was not previously aware of any such claim. He bad warned Captain Wiig against taking his vessel into that position, and also to take it away when he had gone there at his own risk. The claim was not entertained. BEFVND OF DUES. Mr Dougherty, U.S.S. Co. agent, applied, through' the Collector of ■ ustoms, for a refund of £2 4s 3d, dues paid on behalf of the Suva, which had since been wrecked. It was decided to make enquiry as to the usual custom in such cases, and to act accordingly. CEMENT.
Johnston and Co., Wellington, notified the despatch of a quantity ol cement.
In reply to Mr Matthewson, the Engineer said the cement was taken at contract price, but it was not necessarily above the quantity stipulated by contract. Messrs Dawson and Co., Wellington, wrote offering 500 casks of cement. There being no need for a further supply, a reply to be sent to that effect. HABBOE MASTEb’s BEPOBT. Captain Bennett made a general report, in which he stated the necessity of another chain for the buoy. Mr Hickson thought the Secretary should be instructed to get prices from the different tradesmen, for the chain, and not confine it to Messrs Wingate, Burns and Co. The Chairman said if it was covered by their tender they would have to get the preference. Mr Dickson did not consider that it could be, the contract being for a different object. It was decided to leave the matter over until the following meeting.
engineer’s report. The report was read, as follows;— On the 13th inst. I left for Wellington to give evidence before the Committee of the Lewer House on matters connected with the present Harbor Bill, and returned on the 22nd inst. We began a 36ft section of the breakwater on Saturday, June 30, and finished it on Friday, 13th inst., making a total length of 361 feet, and we have now another section well advanced, requiring about four days to finish. This will take us to 397 feet. It would have been completed before this but the weather has been unfavorable. In the next section we will be able to drop - amok and build with four rows of block** instead of three as at present, the breakw» wr being 21ft o; n .> ...a with 13ft 9in at high water during spring tides. On the 16th inst the Good Templar discharged a cargo of cement, and on the 18th inst. the Leo, drawing 7ft 6in, discharged timber, alongside the breakwater. As decided on at a previous meeting the Borough Council were supplied with shingle to make the road leading to the blockyard. Captain Winter has applied on behalf of the County Council for some shingle washed up on the beach from time to time by the sea. He would only require such as would be of no use to us without washing, e - J would require it tipped over the railwiv- line on the Kaiti road.
Mr Matthewson move* 3 that the application of the bounty Engineer be granted, providi’g that the actual cost, with wear and -ear, were recouped. He thought it gave them an opportunity of assisting another local body, which they should gladly avail themselves of. Mr Gannon wished to know exactly what they were asked to vote on —he would like something definite to go on ; tie quantity of stone that was wanted, and so on.
Mr Clark said the Harbor Board did not know what they could give. Mr Chambers seconded the motion. Mr Matthewson said it mattered nothing to them how many yards the County wanted, provided the Board’s work was not impeded. Mr Dickson would like to know who was to collect the metal, etc. It would be rather premature to go into the matter without sufficient data.
It was then carried that the application be granted, subject to termination by the Board, at any time, the Board to be free of cost and responsibility. payments. The following accounts were passed for payment
