Mr Samuel Vaile, of railway reform celebrity, is moving in the direction of leasing the Auckland sections of railway for five years, on which to test his theories, a guarantee being offered that the net revenue paid to the Treasury shall not be less than was received in 1887-88. Other terms and conditions are to be arranged on an equitable basis, but so as not to place the public in a worse position than it is at present. I learn that Mr Vaile has been replied to to the effect that at this period of the session the Government have not sufficient time to consider so large and important a question, which will have to be dealt with by special legislation. The Government, however, will consider the offer during the recess. Notice ie given in an advertisement in another column that a pound has been established on section 36, North Gisborne, and that Mr John Fisher has been appointed poundkeeper.
