FOOTBALL.

ENGLISHMEN V. AUCKLAND. Auckland, last night. The football match which took place on Saturday afternoon between the English team and Auckland, resulted in a victory for the former by three points to nil, OTAGO V. CANTERBURY. Dunedin, last night. The match on Saturday between Canterbury and Otago was won by the latter by seven points to nil.

Auckland, Saturday. In an interview shortly after the team arrived in Auckland Dr Brooks said We have had a grand time of it right through the colonies. Hie hardest game we had was with Sydney University. They are a very good team, and nine of their members are in the reps. They were very rough ; in fact they almost equalled Wellington for rough play. You may have seen in the Sydney papers the account of spectators' conduct; they were terrible, I have never seen such oonduot at any other time throughout our tour, Talk of barrackers I they were all at it. How do they play the Rugby game over there ? Pretty good, but not nearly so good as you do in New Zealand. They are a long way behind this colony, but they have some very good players. In reply to enquiries, Lillywhlte saicl he anticipated losing over the tour. He knew what large crowds followed to see football tnatches'in Victoria, but the Englishmen could not play the game properly, and after the first match, which some 25,000 people attended, the speotators never numbered anything very great, oon.equently for a long time they were only paying hotel bills and travelling expenses. He had nothing to complain of as to the attendance at the Rugby matches, and they did fairly well out of them. They' had practically wasted six weeks in Australia playing tfie Victorian game, and he was sorry they had not left for New Zealand a fortnight sooner and played more matches here. Lillywhite gave the following particulars of the movements of the team An effort is being made to have another match with the Auckland team next Wednesday. Next Thursday the Englishmen leave for Napier, where they meet the Hawke’s Bay representatives on Saturday. No match will be played against Wellington, Jjut the teatp meet the Wairarapa representatives at Masterlon on the Monday or Tuesday after the Napier match. The next fixture is with Canterbury, at Christchurch, on Thursday, 20ih inet. The Otago match will be played on Saturday, 22nd inst., at Dunedin, and on the following Wednesday, the 26tb, a match with a com. biued South Island team will be decided, Lillywhite is nt present in negotiation with the Southern authorities to have another match with a combined South Island team at Christchurch on the 99th. it this cannot be arranged, then a return match will be played instead. Their further movements are at present uncertain. The steamer Kaikoura, by which the team leave for England, sails from Wellington on Thursday,. 4th October, two days earlier than she was expected to. It she left on Friday evening instead their programme would be easily arranged, and they wquld leave for Wellington immediately after the return match in Christchurch, and from thence proceed at once to Hawera, where they would meet the Taranaki representatives. From Hawera they would go to Wanganui, where their last colonial match would be played on Thursday, returning at once to Wellington, and leaving for England on Friday morniug. I
