CABLEGRAMS
London, Sept 11. Mr Walter Besant, the novelist, who has been seriously ill for some time past, has just undergone a most painful operation. A considerable improvement in his condition is reported. Mr Gladstone is busily engaged in a review of the “ Life of the late W. E. Forster,” by Mr Pemyss Read, which was recently published. The article will appear in one of the monthly periodicals, and is looked forward to with great interest, seeing the prominence that is given Mr Gladstone in the work. The Forts bridge, which is the greatest work of its kind in the world, and the main feature of which is the extraordinary spans of a third of a mile in length, will be completed in October.
