THE METROPOLITAN STAKES. Sydney, Sept 26. The following is the result of the race for the Metropolitan Stakes : — Mr Cook’s Lamond (6.9) .. ..1 Mr Gannon’s Arsenal (9.0) .. .. 2 Hon J. White’s Abercorn (9,8) .. &

A sporting scribe cites a few peculiar instances in the career of the now celebrated son of Wild Eagle, the Hurdle horse. Of the dam of Eaglet there is but little known, although she is said to be a daughter of Modesty, the dam of Impudence, winner of the Adelaide Cup, of 1876. The horse under notice was not broken in until he w«.s a four-year-old, when he changed hands for £l5. Subsequently he was sold to a shearer and carried him and his swag to Wilcaniliu,

where he was sold for £3O to a relative of P. Bolger, the well-known jockey. The latter was successful in winning- no less than thirty-two races with the son of Wild Eagle ere he sold him to his present owners, the Messrs Miller, which was after the horse donkey-licked a large field, in a Hurdle Race at Moonee Valley. Dunlop, who was the other day reported as having broken down, has been scratched for the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups. This horse was in his prime last year when he romped home with 8-4 up, in front of Silvermine, in the Melbourne Cup, cutting out the two miles in 3niin. 28)sec, the uickest on record in Australia. £ Saunders, who rode Dunlop in this race, and who went home shortly afterwards, is returning from England in the incoming mail boat, the Oroya. The Island Bay Racing Club, if successful in their negotiations for a suitable racecours 9 site about three miles from town, will resume operations under the name of the Wellington City and Suburban Club. Carbine was scratched last week for all engagements at the Christchurch Spring Meeting. The colt being taken to Melbourne may now be looked, on as a certainty, and we shall probably hear of his being shipped in a day or two.
