Melbourne, October 29, Whakawai did his last long work before the Cup this morning, and was given a strong two miles and a quarter gallop, going splendidly. Vespasia, Wil iam Tell, and T.W., have been scratched for the Cup.
Christchurch, yesterday. St. Clair and British Lion commenced work this morning with a good three-quarter pace gallop for two miles. Both moved well. St. Clair subsequently a little lame. Lorraine did one and a quarter mile steady. This horse appears peife ;tly sound, but has been eased in Work for the past two days. Strenuous covered two miles at half pace. Van ial was sweated over the same distance. Exchange and Son of a Gun were sent a mile at half top speed, there being little to choose from between the pair at the end. Manton took e sy exercise over two mi les and a half. Chain Shot and Engagement galloped the Cup distance at strong p >ce. Sil vermark was sweated over four miles. Ruby traversed two and a half miles at an easy pace. Richmond lead Phormium Tenax in a steady canter over the same distance. Lochiel is reported to be doing well at Yaldhurst,
