After a slight delay at the post the flag fell to a good start, Tradition on the outside being the first to move, and Melos the last. After Tradition came Lord Headington, Mentor, Malua, Bravo, and Whakawai. In crossing the tan Malua supplanted Tradition, and he had Mentor, Spade Guinea, Newmaster, Bravo, and Whakawai in close attendance. As the field swept past the stand Spade Guinea had charge of affairs but she was soon dispossessed of her advantage by Melos. Then came Newmaster, Mentor, Bravo. Dick Swiveller, and Whakawai. No material alteration took place in the position until nearing the bridge, when Cyclops aud Tradition made a forward movement and at the Abattoirs the former was leading, with Whakawai, Bravo, Australian Peer, and Ensign following in the order named. When hardly a mile from home Cyclops was still in front, with Bravo, Yeoman, Whakawai, Mentor, and Tradition in a cluster at his heels. Ensign had by this time fallen back, having met with an accident. As they neared the straight Bravo closed on the leader and was the first round the turn, followed by Cyclops, Whakawai, Mentor, Yeoman, and Tradition. Much the same order was preserved until half a furlong from the winning post, when Mentor went up with a rush and secured the lead, both Tradition and Yeoman at the same time passing Bravo, Cyclops, and Whakawai. Mentor continued on, full of running, and won by a length and a half from Tradition, who was a length in front of The Yeoman. Cyclops, Whakawai, Bravo, Australian Peer, and Recall followed in the order mentioned. Time, 3min 33]sec. C.J.C. SPRING MEETING. Christchurch, Tuesday. While running for the Southern Stakes (at Melbourne) lately the racing mare Mimulus was suddenly seized with paralysis on reaching the home turn and fell heavily. It is said that she is subject to such attacks, and, if so, it was a most foolish proceeding to start her. The profits on the recent meeting of the Victoria Amateur Turf Club are said by Mr. Bond to be upwards of £lOOO in excess of last year’s total and further improvements in the club’s property are contemplated. Before the Cup race many tempting offers were made to purchase the racehorse Tradition, one being as high as 2000 guineas, but his owner positively refused to put a print on hluii
