An Enterprising Young Man

DvnßOlx, Saturday. A young man who gave his name as Albert Sinclair, who arrived here by the Ruapehu on her last trip, was committed for trial yesterday for obtaining money by false pretences. Joining the ship at Gravesend as a second class passenger, the accused represented himself as a son of a wealthy banker in London. He had on his card “ Lieutenant Albert Sinclair, Middlesex Yeomanry, Waterford Mansion House, Ashford,” With these recommendations he speedily became very intimate with Mr Kennaway, the fourth officer. He gave out that he was coming to Dunedin to marry a wealthy cousin, and had a draft waiting him for £2OO or £250. The steward was induced to advance him £'2o on a guarantee from Mr Kennaway, to whom he gave a cheque for £25, signed Moss Marks, an alleged uncle, and also a deposit receipt tor £2O to take care of. No draft for Sinclair was received at the Bank in Dunedin, nor did he enquire for one. Apparently to assist the deception, the accused engaged an under steward as valet. On the accused was found a railway pass in the name of Harvey Marks. This is believed to be his name. The rich cousin whom he was to marry was said to be the daughter of a late pawnbroker here, who loft for Sydney near twelve months ago.
