Murray, the Maori who escaped from Lyttelton gaol, was sentenced to five years’ penal servitude for housebreaking. The celebrated vine at Hampton Court produces annually two tons of grapes, valued at Is per lb, and therefore worth £2OO. The action for alleged libel, Larnaoh v. proprietors of N.Z. Herald, will be heard at Wellington on the 21st inst., before a special jury.

The importation of sheep into New South Wales from New Zealand has been prohibited, owing to the last outbreak of scab in this colony. During the ‘ ‘ dark horse hoax ” he, though willing to look at the animal, declined to do so without the owner’s permission. His initials are W.J.H., and he-deserves credit.
It is now learned that the murderers of Mr and Mrs Sanudo, the Havana millionaires obtained £BO,OOO. An anonymous writer promises to give the murderers to justice if he is guaranteed £5OOO. The excellent management of the Berlin municipal finances is once more demonstrated by the report of the City Treasury for the fiscal year ending April 1, 1888, which shows a surplus of 3,825,720 marks.
What is local journalism coming to when an evening paper devotes three quarters of a column to the revolting details of a case which is disgusting for an elderly person to read, and by the publication of which no earthly good can be attained ? “Can you tell me,” he asked, “ the exact physiological and mathematical duration of a kiss ?” “ About a second and a half,” she answered demurely. “Thanks,” he replied, •' I will make a minute of it.”
At the R.M. Court ou Tuesday Frederick DeLacy was fined 10s or 21 hours’ imprisonment for drunkenness, and sentenced to seven days’ imprisonment for resisting the police, and 30 days for begging, sentences to be cumulative.
