BOROUGH COUNCIL.

Tax above Council met on Tuesday evening. Preeent: The Mayor, and Ore Harding, Lewie, Joyce, Taylor, Whinray, and Coleman. axtxbiax wills. The Napier Borongh Council wrote forwarding a copy of the specifications under which they had certain artesian wells sunk, and also stating that they were prepared to let the Council have the use of the tools for three months at £2O. Messrs Doney Bros., Hastings, wrote offering to sink a well 200tt for £lOO, provided they succeeded in getting a flow of water. If they failed and struck rock at any depth less than 200 ft they were only to receive £5O, but if at a depth of 200 ft they had not struck water they would proceed, if the indications were still favorable, at the rata of £2 per day, for all tools and labor. Mr Wilkinson reported that during his stay in Napier ho had collected information on the question, and he estimated that the cost of boring 800 ft would bo £262 10s. Ths Mayor said the only course the Council could take would be to call for tenders for sinking a well, but they ought to follow as does to Messrs Doney's offer as ptfssible, in ths specifications, as ha considered it was a most reasonable one. Cr Joyce, in seconding the motion, said the Council should inform Messrs Doney Bros, that they regretted their inability to accept the offer owing to a by-law being in existence which compelled them to call for tenders for all works over £2O. The motion was carried, and it was decided to advertise in Napier and Christchurch for this work. overseeb’s report. The Overseer reported that Mr Parnell wished to have the footpath in front of his prenrirea levelled so that he could tar it. Mr Wilkinson suggested that the rhole of the footpath from Lowe street to Peel street should be levelled and tarred. The Waikanae s*™ required attention as the abutments were being washed away.
