Road Metal.
At the meeting of the Borough Council on Tuesday evening, a letter was received from the County Council ■tating that they bad decided to proceed no further with the proposal to construct a tramwav to connect Barker’s Quarry with the main road, owing to the Council having entered into a contract for the supply of Patutahi stone, at 8s lid per yard, delivered. Mr 8. Doleman wrote, offering to supply the Council with 1000 yards of beach metal, hand broken, at 4s 6d per yard. He also forwarded a sample of the stone. Cr Joyce said he did not think the Council could entertain the offer, as it was a private one. If they required atone, the proper course would be to call for tenders.
Cr Whinray considered the metal was of a far superior quality to that obtained from Barker’s quarry. He would move that tenders be called for the supply of 1000 yards of metal, which could be delivered in the contractor’s spare time, and stacked at the back of the old brewery, which he thought would make the most suitable depot. Cr Lewis seconded the proposition. Cr Joyce would like to see tenders called only when the stone was required, as it would then save the extra cartage from the depot. He moved an amendment to that effect, which was seconded by the Mayor. Cr Whinray said the principal reason for having the tenders in at once was that heretofore the Council could not obtain the metal with sufficient despatch. It had been urged some time ago that the metal should be delivered at a depot, as it was always on hand when required. He thought this was a most opportune time to get a good supply of metal. The original motion was then put and carried.
pr Joyce thought that the streets should only be broken up where it was absolutely necessary, owing to the inconvenience that was occasioned.
