COUNTY COUNCIL.

The above Council met yesterday afternoon. Present: Crs Clark (Chairman), Stubbs, Coleman, Orr, Grey, Murphy, King. Mr Malone wrote asking that some telegraph poles on the Kaid be lowered, as they were at present stopping his forming that road.

The Clerk said he had telegraphed to Mr Bold, who applied stating that the work would be done, the Council paying the cost. The Engineer estimated the cost at £2 and it was agreed to have the work done. The Crown Lauds Office wrote asking that a sketch plan of the land at Patutahi, which the Council requested to be reserved for a resting place for stock, should be forwarded to Wellington. With regard to fencing the same the Government stated that they had no power to grant any money for that purpose.—Received. Mr M. Kiely wrote stating that he had made a mistake in his figures in tendering tor section 15 and could therefore not go on with the work, and asking the Council to refund his deposit of £5.

The Council decided to refuse the application.

The Clerk stated that his account* had been audited and found to be correct.

The following accounts were passed : — Jones and O'Donuell £BO 12s; D. Quinn, £2B Os 6d; J Mclntosh £27 4s ; G. Bon £55 12s; R. Atkins £39 19s; R. Stinton £2O ; D. Malone £4O ; A. Devery £5 15s; A. J. Fyson £2 16s ; Taylor and Barrington £8 8s ; Ade ne and Primrose £43 10s ; Te Kooti £5; T. Ad .ms £3 Ils ; A. J. O’Neil £35 ; R. Knox £lO5 ; Engineer’s men £lB 4s ; H. E. Kenny £9 ; C. Anderson £8 6s 8d ; G. Moore £416.; J. Oilivier £9 ; A. J. O’Nail £10; J. Mclntosh £B. The Clerk stated that in the last batch of summonses that had been issued Mr Booth had upheld Mr Brassey’s objection that the statement of claim wr.s not properly set out, and he considered the only cause why Mr Brassey raised such an objection was because he would not agree to an adjournment ot the cases. He had pointed out certain defects when Mr Brassey was the Solicitor for the Council, which had been altered, and he now sued on the amended form. Mr Warren further added that there was about £270 overdue rates since 1887 and he estimated that tbe Council would lose fully £lOO of that amount through bankruptcies and alto from several bad titles.

Cr King proposed that tenders should be called for the supply of 1000 yards of broken metal, a small portion of which could be used for filling holes in the Matawhero road, and the remainder for metalling the main road between Makaraka and the town boundary. Cr Grey did not eee, that because (her* was a sum of money to credit of one riding, that sneh money should be spent whether the work was required or not. Tbe work was not needed, and was simply a luxury. Cr Murpby seconded, and thought Cr King should look after his own district. Each district should have its own money so long as it did not play the fool with it. Tbe Chairman also supported the motion, which was carried, Cr Gray only objecting. It was agreed that ths road should be properly formed at a cost of £3O. It was agreed to spend about £5O in making tepairs to the road between the Oilsprings hotel and Mangatikapua. The Engineer wished to point out that when the roads were first formed the crown had to be made high owing to the inferior metal used. Now they had good metal he would like to see the crown lowered before any more metal was put on, a* every load put on made the crown higher and consequently narrower.
