REPORT OF THE SYDNEY MARKET,

The following report is taken from th. N.Z.L. and M.A. Company's circular, dated January 11: — Butter (duty Id per lb)—The usual Christmas demand kept prices for butter up while it lasted, the value of best New Zealand being maintained at la 3d per lb, but before the New Year the market eased and la ruled as the quotation for beat imported until the beginning of the present week, when thaLocal Butter Company most unexpectedly reduced the price from la 3d to lOd. Business is therefore at a standstill, holders of imported butter not being inclined to meet the drop in the price of the local article, the quality of a large proportion of the latter being very poor, while that of the balk of supplies from New Zealand is really good. At present best New Zealand cannot b. quoted at above 101. Cheese (duty 2d per lb)—The market is at the moment rather lightly stocked with N.Z. cheese. To-day’s quotation stands at Bjd for beat quality loaf. Hams (2d p«r lb)—Dull, the market btlng without animation, and prices are scarcely maintained. Bacon (duty 2d per lb) —This market show, a firmer tendency, if anything, but prices ar. without alteration, 9Jd being th. full figure for known brands. Maize (free)—has ruled from 8s 4d to 3a Bd, but with the beginning of the week quotations for prime corn advanced to 4s, wearily descriptions ruling from 3s upwards. Wheat (free) — Extreme stagnation has characterised the market. In the absence of transactions quotations are merely nominal, say 4s lOd to fie for Tuscan, Hunter’s White proportionally lower. Oats (free)—Little change h*s taken place in this market, holders in nearly every instance storing for an improv.d market, and we have hopn that theaa anticipations may shortly be realised. potatoes (free)—When last writing we quoted potatoes at £l3, which waa looked upon as something exceptional. Since the New Year, however, prioes advanced to as high as £24 per ton—in fact, the demand waa so far in excess of the supply that almost any figure could hav. been obtained at th. moment. Prices are now at from £l4 to £l5.

Tallow (free)—Competition at late sales has lacked animation. We quote: best beef, £26 to £27 ; medium, £25 to £26; inferior, from £22 upwards.
