BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The Borough Council met on Tuesday evening, when there were present:—The Mayor, aud Ore Whinray, Dunlop, Harding, JoyM, Taylor, Lucas, Lewis, and Coleman. ARTESIAN WELLS. Mr J. Garry, of Napier, wrote stating thaf the specifications as drawn out by th. Counci* for sinking a well, required amending. The conditions were that a 2in pipe was to be used, which could not ba driven down th. required depth, 500 ft, as it would be continually bending. A Sin pipe was tha smallest that could be used for such a depth. Mr Garry also stated that he was willing to link a well and supply the tools for Ida a day, with a bonus of £2O on striking water, th. Council to pay his fare to and from Napier, and also the freight for the machinery. Mr Bold telegraphed, recommending Mr Garry as a well tinker. On the motion ot Or Whinray, seconded by Or Lewis, it was decided to alter the specifications aa suggested by Mr Garry. CJBBESFONDESCB. The County Council forwarded a telegram they bad received from the Minister of Lands, stating that a Judge had been appointed to clear up all arrears in regard to native land matters. The Auditor-General forwarded the halfyearly balance sheet ol the Qouueil, which bad boon audited. BBPOBTt. The report of the Public Works Committee was read and adopted. The Fire Inspector reported that he had received a communication stating that the Fire Brigade competition which was to have been held at Invercargill had bean abandoned. The Mayor said he felt sure that, should the local team have had the opportunity of competing, they would hav> given a good account of themselves. The Council would agree with him in expressing regret at the manner in which the members bad been treated, especially after tbs way in which they had worked. PAYMENTS. The following accounts ware ordered to be paid:—South British Insurance Go., £2 5s 9d; D M Orr, £2 5a fid ; E Clements, £2 19s fid ; T Burns, £2 2«; A Thomas, lie; Standard, £2 Ils; A B Muir, £6 8s Od; petty cash, £5. TENDERS. The following tenders were received:— Building a stable—G Rowley (accepted), £23 12s; H J Bead, £27 10s; J Ponsford, £BO 10a; D Curtain, £97.—For the supply of 1000 yards of broken metal—D McLoughlin, 6a 5d per yard; M Morgan (accepted), 8a s}d ; D Malone, 4s 4d ; S Doleman, 5a fid ; J Mclntosh, 4a 2$ d. It was decided to call for tenders for building a concrete tank of 2000 gallons at the fire engine shed, tenders to close on Saturday next. The Public Works Committee were authorised to open the tenders. VERANDAH SROUTINOS. Tha Inspector was instructed to see that the spoutings of the verandahs in Gladstone Bead were kept in proper repair.
