AQUATICS.

• The first heat of the Gisborne Rowing Club’s trial-fours was rowed off on Thursday evening on the Taruheru river, between Young’s crew and Drummond’s crew. The race was won easily by Drummond by several lengths. The final heat was rowed last night between Drummond’s crew and Lunn’s crew, Lunn proving an. easy winner. McLean’s crew was scratched owing to the indisposition of bow. The following is the crew selected by the Poverty Bay Rowing Club for the annual match against Napier:—Lee, stroke; Marshall, 3; Nisbett, 2; Gidney, bow. Mr W. Ratcliffe has been appointed captain of the Poverty Bay Rowing Club. The yacht Akarana is offered for sale in Sydney at £550. In her recent race in Port Jackson she was sailed by a professional be longing to Sydney, and had a time allowance of 18 minutes. Her skipper hugged the shore too.xflosely when half the race had been completed, and she took the ground, but after sticking hard and fast for five minutes she was floated off. A fine fresh breeze then sprang up, and under full sail she overhau'ed every boat except the Sirocco, a ten tonner (scratch), and won the event on her time allowance. The prize was £2O and three cases of champagne. Amongst the beaten boats was the Assegai, which, it will be recollected, easily defeated the little Aucklander in the ace at Melbourne for the prize offered by Sir J. W. Clarke a couple of months ago. It is somewhat singular, remarks the Post, that something has recently gone wrong with the senior crews of three different

clubs which are to be represented at t the regatta in Wellington on Saturday week. J. E. Hume, of the Stars, is very ill with rheumatic fever. W. Bridson, - cf the Wellingtons, is suffering from the offsets of a sunstroke, and the stroke of of the Wanganuis has declined to row beeuUtho other members of the crew will xHKwactiee enough. «e proposed whaleboat race between the Thames and the Waitemata crews fell through because the latter declined to reduce the stakes from £5O to £25 a-side. The Thames men forfeited their deposit of £lO.
