Mr Soimes, the solicitor for the Timos proprietary, in hie evidence before the Purnell G nnmis’ion, said Mr Houston, the Seoretary of the Patriotic League, brought the letters to the Times office, and stated that Piggott wanted £5OOO for them. The Times re’ained the letters, being satisfied of their genuineness, and paid Houston £3OOO for them. Houston then g ive Piggott £l7OO for the eight letters, Tho Times paid Detective Moser, an American, £l4OO for watching Mr Parnell, Mr Labouohero, and others. Mr Lewis, the solicitor, employed a detective to " shadow ” Piggott. The Times, mt to be outdone, also employed a detective to “ shepherd ” Piggott, though the latter was not aware of the foot. The Times never made any enquiry as to how Piggott obtained the letters which wore secured by the Times, The Times also secured letters to Piggott from Mr Labouchere containing ten pound notes. In a letter from Mr Lewis to Piggott he charged the latter to admit that the letters he had given to the Times were forgeries. Mr McDonald, manager of the Times, in his examination, said he was not aware of the foot that the letters were offered to the Pall Mall Gazette.
