COMMON SENSE AT LAST. THE GOVERNMENT INTEND TAKING ACTION. THE MURDERER’S RETURN BEING PREVENTED. TRANSHIPMENT OF ARTILLERY. Sir Harry Atkinson met the Justices of the Peace yesterday afternoon. The following gentlemen were present:—Mr A. Graham, Mr Booth, 8.M., the Mayor (Captain Tucker), Major Bopata, Messrs Murphy, G. L. Sunderland, Bennett, Lucas, Gray, Lewis, C. Thomson, Kenny, and Inspector Kiely. The Premier stated that the Government would order Te Kooti back. If Te Kooti persisted in entering the district a number of the Permanent Artillery and police would be sent to put him back. If the force to be sent from Wellington is not sufficient special constables will be sworn in. The Premier will not leave the district until he has seen the matter disposed of. He deprecated the meeting held on Thursday night, when he had come here to settle matters. The Hussars were warned last night to hold themselves in readiness. A number of the Permanent Artillery left Wellington for Gisborne last night.
