SPORTING NEWS.

The following is a description of the Dunediu Cup race: — Sultan, 4 yrs, Apremont—Miss Kate, Bst (White) 1 Vandal, 3 yrs, Ingomar—Bubina, 6st 7ib (O'Keefe) .. .. .. .. 2 Occident, 3 yrs, Lapidist—The West, 6st 31b (Larder) .. .. .. ..3

Manton, Bst 101 b (Derritt), Dudu, Bst 51b (Mathews), Enid, (Cusdin), St. James, 6si 111 b (McMorran) also ran. Dudu was rushed on the totalisator, and would not have paid more than level money. The whole of the seven acceptors came to the post. Mr Driver got them away the first time of asking to a capital start. Pudu’s colours showed prominent, but she was pulled back, and Occident immediately dashed away to |the front, and on passing the stand was four or five lengths ahead of the rest, of whom Dudu was the most prominent, with Vandal at her heels. Occident, who had apparently partly over, come his rider, showed the way round to the back of the course, but was soon pulled back again within a more reasonable distance of the field, and at six furlongs he had barely* two clear lengths’ advantage of Vandal—at whose heels came Dudu and Sultan side by. side. Manton was going fifth, with Enid and St. James whipping in. Passing the stand the first time, when a mile and a distance had been traversed, Occident still held the lead, but Dudu a few strides further on ranged up alongside of him, with Vandal also going on fast, and Sultan closing up on the last-named. Along the back stretch Dudu and Occident raced neck and neck, Sultan now running into third place, Vandal fourth, and Manton, whom Derrett was begining to ride vigorously, fifth, and looking dangerous. A few strides past the half-mile post Sultan got on terms with Occident, and Dudu simultaneously falling back beaten, the pair were left in front, but with Vandal close handy, and Manton still going well. Approaching the home turn Occident appeared to have shot his bolt, Sultan clearing away from him, and Vandal also soon giving him the go-bye, the final result evidently lying between the two last-named. Sultan, however, had palpably the best of the run homo, and won with something in hand by a clear half-length from Vandal, Occident had a great fight for third place, which ha secured three or four lengths behind Vandal. After shaking off Manton a surprise came in an astounding run by St, James, who made a good fourth, with Manton fifth, Enid sixth, and Dudu, the favorite, absolutely last. Time. 3min G.'ijaeo.

Commenting on Carbine's prospects at tbs approaching V.B.C, Meeting, “Augur” says " The son of Musket and Mersey’s forte is supposed to be speed, but I have an idea that Walter Hiokenbotbam does not despair of him staying two miles and a quar. tar, if not three miles. What a knock the wiseacres will get should the Auckland colt down his opponents in the Champion Stakes. The following acceptances were received for the Hawke’s Bay Cup (one-mile and threequarters), to bs run on the 18th March :-tSilonce, Escutcheon, Hilda, British Liod, Lady Norah, Lady Florin, Becluse, Salisbury, Escapade.
