A private cable message was received in Auckland last Saturday announcing the death pt Major Walmsley, managing director of the Auckland Stud Company. The news ersated a general shock, for few men in Auckland were better known, bettor liked, or more respected than the gallant officer. Amongst horse owners, racing men generally, and jockeys, Major Walmsley was held in universal esteem, and at the race meeting on Saturday all the jockeys wore crape on their left arms, and toe dags at the grandstand at Takapuna were halfmast high. It was a curious coincidence that the inaugural meet, ing of the Tattersall’s Club should be held on the day Major Walmsley’s death . was announced. He was a member of the first rattersall'i Club ever formed in Auckland, the other members being Mr S. Morrin, Mr W. J. Marks, and Mr J. Kirkwood. Three of those have passed over to the great majority. An exciting bolt occurred on Thursday afternoon, culminating in a general smash- , ttp oil the bridge.
