An exciting shooting affray took place in the town of Mudgee (N.S.W.) on February 7. It would seem that Mr Dick, the gaoler, had received ths usual remittance for the payment of his men, and had failed to distribute the amounts. Senior-Warder Jenkins dispatched a message to headquarters to make enquiries about the salaries, and the comptroller arrived in town to see into it. Di k became still futher irritated, and, meeting Jenkins in the corridor, he drew a revolver and shot straight at him, Jenkins “ducked ” his head when he saw the action of Dick, otherwise he would have received the bullet either in the breast or neck. As it was, he was struck fair in the centre of the chin, the ball lodging in the skin of the throat beneath. The chin was shattered, and a very serious wound inflicted. He made a rush at Dick, and succeeded in wresting the weapon from him, then hastened to inform the police, who at ones arrested Dick and imprisoned him. Jenkins is as well as-can be expected from the peculiarly complicated nature of the wound, but no serious danger is anticipated. It was known some time before the unfortunate occurrence that Dick was in no fit state to have tbs control of weapons, but the occurrence was nevertheless a shook to the townspeople.
