A sweepstake of 20 eovs. with 1000 sots. added. Mr M. Jaoob’s oh m Sedition, 7st 81b, Mr G. G. Stead's b'r h Lochiel, 9st 41b (Clifford) 2 Mr D. Wallaoe's b o Carbine, Bst 121 b (O'Brien) ~ ~ 8 —The other starters were Cranbronk, Bob, Tradition, Piutarob, Pakeba, Lady Betty, The Charmer, Abrupt (late Peter Borne, late Master John) Epicurian, Surprise, Gladstone, Paddy. Melody, Chetwynd (lata Paragon), Uncae, Churchill, Garters and Rip. From a magnificent start Paddy, Lochiel and Sedition were the flret to show up st all prominently, and had slightly the bsst of it when a couple of furlongs had been covered. With the top weight close up, when half the distance had been traversed Faddy was at the head of affairs, with Carbine just clear of the second division. Halt a furlong further on Clifford took L tohiel to the froqt, but he' in turn wee quickly surpassed by Sedition; the latter never being again headed won with a little in hand by threes quarters of a length, a neck just separating Lochiel and Carbine; then came Churchill, Paddy, Gladstone, Lady Betty and Chetwynd in that order, with Melody and Bip whipping in, Time: 1 min. 16| sene. Lochiel, who had been running on the off side at Mr D. Wallace's Carbine, swerved towards the rail when the horse on the inside was one hundred yards from home, and a slight collision took place between the two New Zealanders. The collision, which resulted in Carbine being thrown out of his stride, oould not have affected the result, though he might have got a little closer to tbs winner. • Sedition wm the pick of the handicap When the weights were declared, and the stable backed him for a pot of money, but latterly he had gone off a good deal and the stable were favouring ' chance of Gladstone in preference to him, Bbunswick Stakes. Loyalist ~ ~ 1 Steel Arrow .. 2 Bussley 8
SECOND DAY, March 6th. The second day’s racing of ths Victorian Baaing Club's Autumn Meeting was close and muggy. The meeting opened with the Maiden Stakes for which Churchill wm at first a hot favorits, at one time touching 7 to 4 on him, but Lady Agnes’ friends oame to the rescue, and from 4 to 1 she advanced quickly to 7to 4. A mile and a quarter, however, was too fast with a two year old, and the favorite got comfortably home in advance. Tremendous pot boiled over in the Sire's Produce Stakes, though Richelieu wm well supported at 5 to 1, his owner, Mr O’Loghlin, - had only one wager of £6O to £lO about him, ' Sluggard jumped in a very slovenly manner right through the Hurdle Race, blundering terribly at the last hurdle, but his superior pace enabled him to score an easy victory at the finish. The public never wavered m their allegiance to Lochiel for the Australian Cup, 2 to 1 being the beet price obtainable until cluse upon the start, when 600 to 100 was finally taken in one pop. Clifford rode a beautiful race. Seeing the likelihood of a slow pace he took the favorite to the fpont, and riding a waiting race for a while out out the last mile and a half in 2min. 40eec, Carbine who struggled gamely for first place was unable to last it out to the finish with his fellow New Zealander. Loohiel's victory was received most enthusiastically. Mr Stead’s pluck being the theme of general admiration. The folowing are the details :— Maiden Stakes, of 300 sovs., 1| miles.
