Late Vigilance Committee
SETTLEMENT OF ACCOUNTS. A meeting of the tnombora of the late Vigilance Committee wi held at their office yesterday. Present; W. K. Chambers (Chairman), Major Westrap, J, E. Espie, W. Walsh, W. F. Crawford, Hoani Buru and A F. Hardy. The balance sheet was submitted »y the treasurer and passed. The following are the names of the subscribers—J. W; Sunderland, J. E. Espie. W. K. Chambe-s, W. F. Crawford, A. F. Hardy, G. Scott, J. G. Wilson, F. R. Arthur, A. Kempthorne, D. Reid,'A. McKenzie, W. Watson, T. Goldsmith, T. J. Dickson, P. Maher, 9. L. Sunderland, S. M. Wilson, P. Barker, A. Grey, W, Walsh, Mr Bioheno, W, Cooper, and Mr Wake, the total amount being £53 16s. I'he total expenditure for messengers, telegrams, collection of arms, printing and advertising,! stationery, clerical assistance, traps and sundries amounts to a total of £45 2s 3d, leaving a balance ot £8 13s 91, which the Committee unanimously voted should be handed over to the funds of the Hussars.
The amount was accordingly sent to Captain Winter with the following letter: — ”As representatives of the Poverty Bay settlers we have the pleasure to hand you herewith a sum of £8 13s 9d, being balance ot the tunda entrusted to us as a Commii tee tu carry out the settlers’ determination to stop Te Kooti from entering this district. We wish to express our high appreciation ot the way your corps carried out the duties imposed on it in the late expedition to Opotikt. We trust you will be able to keep up the efficiency of your troop as it has proved so serviceable in this emergency. -Yours etc., W. K. Chambers, Hoani Ruru. J. E. Espie, W.C. Walsh, Chas. Westrup, W. F. Crawford, A. Hardy.” Before the Committee finely wound up their business they wished to record their appreciation of the hearty co-operation of the following Native tribes—Ngatlporous, Ngrtipahauwera, Ngaitai, Ngaitekete, and Rongowhskaata, who came so promptly forward to assist in stopping Te Kooti's entrance into Poverty Bay, and feel that their action in the matter strengthens the bond of friendship already existing between the Maoris and Europeans on the East Coast.
