Fisk Jubilee Singers.

The Fisk Jubilee Singers last night gave the first of a series of four entertainments before bidding farewell to Gisborne. As a matter of course they were greeted with a splendid house, MeFarlancs’s Hall being crowded. The refining nature of the entertainment and the high quality of the performers are sufficient to sustain the excellent reputation which has been earned by the Company. The programme last night contained some choice selections, the audience being highly delighted. The first part included ” Steal away to Je.us” (with the Lord’s Prayer), “ Get you ready, there's a meeting here to-night,” “The Judgment Day is coming," “My Lord’s writing all the time,” "I'm rolling through an unfriendly world.” There were also selections given by Miss Johnson and Mr Loudin, the latter's laughing song being a tremendous “ bit.” The second portion of the programme opened with the chorus '• The jingling bells." Other items were “ Bright sparkles in the churchyard,” ” Don’t you see that ship come sailing," “ He rose from the dead,” •• The sailor’s life is the life for me," 11 Away over Jordan," ” We shall walk through the valley,” " Sleep, gentle lady.” After each item there was an unmiatakeable demonstration ot approval, many responses having to be made. It is quite unnecessary to dilate on the merits ot ths company, or even to attempt a criticism; they have the wonderful power of being able to please wherever they go, and they bring upon the stage a charm and sense of refinement that audiences in a theatre are but rarely favored with. Toe company perform in Gisborne for three nights longer.
