Soiree and Cantata.
The soiree and cantata held on Tuesday evening in connection with the Presbyterian Sunday School were very successful. There was a good attendance. The tea was provided by a local baker, and the ladies of the Church presided at the tables and assiduously attended to the wants of those who were regaling themselves. The principal ladies who undertook these duties were— -Meedemes Beswiek, Nicoll, Warren, Deßlaquiere, Misses Evans (4), Morgan, Colley (2), Dawson, G. Adair, Oatridge, Steele (2), Good and Gentles. The attendance had considerably increased before 8 o'clock, at which time the curtain rose to allow the performance of the cantata ** The Flower Queen.” The principal parts were represented by Miss Bosina Adair, the Bose and Queen; Lily, Mis* Grace Adair; Violet, Master K. Humphreys ; Sunflower, Miss Sutherland ; Crocus, Mias A. Steele; Heliotrope, Miss N. Steele; Japonic*, Miss Parnell; Dahlia, Miss Hyett; Holyhock, Mies Warren; Recluse, Mr J. Warren. The effect was charming, and the music was delightful, but all the soloists, wilh the exception of Miss Rosins Adair and Mr Warree himself, appeared to be too nervous to do themselves justice. Miss Adair was ■uccossful. The choruses were all rendered, and it waa evident there had much pains taken in this respect. Tho idea of the cantata was a good one, being a happy departure from the old custom of Having an ordinary concert, or of having an overplus of speechifying.
