BOROUGH COUNCIL.
Ths above Council met on Tuesday evening. 1 Present: The Mayor (in the chair), Councillor Townley, Dunlop, Lucas, Whinray, Taylor. Harding, Lewie, Coleman and Joyce. A petition signed by eight ratepayers was read with reference to the west end of Childers Road, and asking that the Council expend some money to make it in a fair state for traffic, and also stating that a sum of money had been alloted for the work last year, bnt had been expended elsewhere. Cr Whinray thought the proper time for dealing with the matter would be when the estimates were being made up. A sum of money could then be allocated for the work. He moved to that effect. Cr Lewis seconded the motion, which was carried. _ The Secretary of the Fire Brigade wrote Baking for the patronage and support of the Councillors in the North Island Fire Brigade demonstration to be held at Gisborne. Cr Lucas considered that the application could be held over till next meeting, as it might prejudice those who were at present collecting for the demonstration. The Mayor said he did not take it as a request for money. Cr Harding proposed, and the Mayor seconded, that the Council accede to the request of the Brigade.—Carried. J. Thompson again forwarded a claim for £lO for finding stone suitable for Borough purposes. . Cr Whinray said he thought it was rather late in the day to make any claim, and he did not remember that the place was disclosed. , . , . The Mayor said a person making a claim should have it properly set out, or at least give the Council some idea of the date when the reward was offered. Cr Lucas thought that the applicant should the paper and give the Council some as to when the reward was offered, W Cr Harding said the question should be settled at once. The Council could surely have some record of the matter. The Mayor proposed that Mr Thompson bo asked to produce the advertisement and other records with reference to the claim. Cr Coleman did not think the Council should waste any further time on the subject, and moved that the letter be acknowledged, the Council seeing no reason to alter the terms of the reply previously sent to Mr Thompton. The Mayor withdrew hii proposition. Cr Lucas seconded the motion. Cr Joyce said no member preeent would with to ignore the claim—that wat if there wm one. . x Cr Whinray moved at an amendment that Mr Thompson be requested to produce the advertisement • they could then find out the exact date and aet the matter finally at rest. The Mayor seconded.—Carried, BOROUGH IWSPEOTOR’B REPORT. I have the honor to report for the information of your Council: —Pound—Thia it flniahed. I have certified to the account, subject to the approval of the P.W. Committee, The walls of the well from which I Intended to get water for the pound, caved in while I waa trying to deepen it. I have been compelled to have another one dug. for which I ask your Council to pay. Both nightcoil carts have been handed over to your Council in thorough working order. ROAD OVERSEER’S RTPORT. Kahutia Street footpath—The work ordered by your Council at last meeting, to form the footpath and ahingle the same, baa been done, at a cost of £4 13s. Gladstone Road footpath—The business people are agreeable to pay one third of tarring that portion of the footpath between Peel and Lowa Streets, but not anything towards lifting or raising the ktrbing. If your Council deem it advisable to lift the kerbing and pick up the present surface, it will cost £2O, including tarring. Gas engine—lt is not likely that the gas engine will he required any more for pumping water for street purposes. Will your Council decide whether it is advisable to return it or not. Taruheru bridge—l would recommend your Council to have all the wheels fastened underneath the swing so that there will be no fear of them falling into the river when being raised; also, the rods fixed the same as those on the Turanganui bridge, as they are a great support when being swung, especially if they have to be opened twice a day, as anticipated. Artesian well—Mr Gilberd is pushing on the work, having got through a hard bed of papa rock into sand bed, and is now making good progress, the depth being 170 ft, but there are still no indications of water. Stone contract— Mr Morgan is picking out the stone best suited for pitchers, and putting it in depots where required. A progress payment of £lO is asked for. Cart—Mr Humphreys has completed his contract for building the cart, and it has been taken over. I would recommend payment for the same. Drains— The contractor for No. 3 drain is progressing favorably with his work. No. 2 drain is not yet commenced. Only about four chains of No. 1 drain have been done. Specifications for pitching the crossings in Gladstone Road will be submitted for your Council’s approval this evening. Day labor £4 4s, as per vouchers. It was decided to have the footpath tarred, With reference to the gas engine, it was decided to ask the Gas Companyl’to allow it to remain in the shed free of charge, the Council keeping it in proper repair until next season, The report was then adopted.
PAYMENTS, The following accounts were ordered to be paid:—Brown and Suiaill, £3 9s; W. H. Clayton, €ll4s 3d ; Gas Companv, £3 3s 9d ; Pound account, £5 19s 7d ; G. Humphreys, r£2l 9s 6d ; A. R. Muir, £9 7s ; R. Little, £4 0a Gd ; A. M. Browne, £1 4s fid ; petty cash, £5 ; Common, Shelton and Co.. £1 5s lOd ; M. Morgan, £lO ; W. Grey, £2 2s ; J. Kenny, £2 2s; Stewart and Butler, £4O ss. The Clerk informed the Council that he had interviewed Mr Bold with reference to the removal of the telegraph lines, and he stated that the Government were willing to accede to the Council's wish, provided they would pay the cost, which would amount to between £2O and £3O. The lines would be laid along the Taruheru rivet to Lytton Road. Cr Joyce thought it advisable to let the (natter stand over till next meeting, so as to allow the Councillors time to consider the subject.
