A Social Evil.

Melbourne, April IQ.

Dr. Figg has been arrested for performing malpractices on a woman, who is now in a dying condition.

In reference to the above a Melbourne paper says:—Another case of supposed malpractice has taken place in Sydney, and the circumstances attendant upon it are decidedly auspicious. It is necessary in the Interests of justice that a thorough investigation should be made; and judging from the evidence already given at tha inquest there is some chance of sheeting home the offence to the guilty parties. The subject, no doubt, is an unsavory one to deal with, but there can be no doubt that malpractices of this character are carried on to a far greater extent than is generally believed, and that though loss of Ute may not always be the result the health of many a woman is irretrievably ruined. Much has already bean done in exposing those who seek to obtain a living by these cruel and nefarious means, and it is only due to ths police to admit that they are always ready to assist to the utmost of their powers But the difficulties surrounding a conviction jn such cases are very great, and when a charge of this nature is brought against a man or woman, tbs offence not having been actually committed, the difficulties are still greater, Of course the ends of justice would be better served if the seducer, who generally finds the means of " paying ” for malpractice, could be discovered; but few women are found to betray those wbo have wronged them, and thus many a man walks tbe streets in freedom who ought to be at hard labor in a prison. All that one can suggest is as close a supervision as posable of the many women in the city and suburbs who professedly earn their living by “ advising ” and of those men •ho announce themselves as general bene* factors without possessing any qualifications.
