Champion Lady Skater to Visit Gisborne.
CHALLENGE OF ONE THOUSAND POUNDS. A few weeks ago we male mention of the intended visit to New Zealand of Miss Mabel Sylvester, champion trick and fancy lady skater, and this morning it is announced that arrangements have been made for Miss Sylvester to visit Gisborne, while on her way South. The season opens on Friday evening next, at the City, Rink, tha proprietor of which has, at great expense, arranged for the visit. Mies Sylvester has a standing challenge of £lOOO, which still remains uncovered and is likely to be an, for the trick and fancy skating championship. The Melbourne Argus says of her Her style is at once a marvel of grace, elegance, and activity, long practice having enab'ed her to achieve such a success as to raise skating to a science. Her title “ The Q wen of Roller Skates” is a well deserved one, for anything more marvellous then her fancy skating can' hardly be imagined. To deearina all her acts would taka up too much space, but riokists should go and judge for themselves,
The Melbourne Punch says:—The fame that has preceded this charming Utile lady, led us to expect something above the ordinary, and on this occasion Miss (Sylvester filled the bill to a considerable extent over expectation. She dances, waltzes, piruettgs, and floats about as if propelled by an aerial power, there being an entire absence of any. other motive power observable during her astounding performance. What skating can ba brought to in the hands of an accomplished artist has been demonstrated by Miss Sylvester, and a useful lesson oan ba learned by even ths tnost adcomplished amateur by a visit to the above rink during the young lady’s engagement, q.;
