Out Future Defenders.

Tub Gisborne Rifle Cadets met at the Haiti range on Saturday morning to compete for the silver medal presented by Major Porter. The medal was held first by C idet O’Meaya, who lost it by absence from parades It was then won by Cadet Featon, who has grown too tall to compete with the school boys, and oa Saturday last-it fell to the present winner, Corporal Chas. Taylor, a'ter a most exciting struggle with Sergeant Pitt, The condi tiona of competition were made easy for the junior cadets, and 26 answered their names. The distance was 100 yards, 10 shots. In the first five I'aylor and Pitt each made 10 points, but in the second firing Taylor made four consecutive bnlls-eyes, and finished with a centre, Pitt making three bulls eyes and two centres. Tavlor has been, a persevering youngster, for during the first year, he could scarcely hit the target, yet he was to be found waiting for hia Captain as early as 5.15 a m. The Government allows 25 rounds per boy for practice, but by his constant practice Taylor has absorbed quite ten boys’ allowance. ’ There will be a parade at the school on Thursday for the presentation of the medal. Captain Warren is to be congratulated on the success which has been attained by the cadets in this most important branch of military service—the use of the rifle—end Corporal Taylor Well deserves hie victory, • 1
