The Church Union.

ITS VARIOUS BRANCHES.

The various Committees in connection with the Church of England Union met in the Bunday school room on Thursday night, there being present—The Revs. J. E. Fox and A. Gardiner, Mrs Baker, and Messrs Akroyd, Baker, Crawford, Featon, R. N. Jones, Kenny, Lysnar, Mann, Ratcliffe, Warren, and H. Watson. Bules were drawn up for the control of future operations. The Literary Society arranged to meet every Thursday evening (subscription 2s a year), and a skeleton syllabus was drawn up. An opening lecture is to be given by the Rev. J. E. Fox, on “ Chess," This will be followed, at other periods, by a debate between Messrs Crawford and Warren, “ Is competition beneficial to the community?” An essay will bs given by Mr Featon, besides which there will be other attractive features announced in due course. Lectures will also be given by the Rev. A. Gardiner, Messrs Kenny and Warren, and the names of Archdeacon Williams, Mr DeLautour and others were mentioned. The Union and Gymnasium Committees also drew up rules. It is proposed with regard to the Gymnasium that it be open every Tuesday night for those over fifteen, the subscription to be 5s for the sesson, and special arrangements to be made for juveniles. It was mentioned that a good many young ladies wished to have the privileges of the gymnasium, and it was proposed that they might have the use of the material free of charge, but it was thought better to leave the matter for the decision of the general meeting. Messrs F. Lysnar and H. Watson were appointed joint secretaries for the time being, and intending members are requested to send in their names. The first general meeting is set down for Tuesday night, Already a large number of names have been given in. An announcement in regard to the Literary Society appears elsewhere. The evening set down for the first general meeting of the Church Union ie Wednesday.
