The Wellington public have not tor * long time suffered from such an amount of subdutd excitement aa has been simmering amongat them for the last two days, in reference to the discovery of the dead body of Mr Thomas Hawkins on Friday night. In some parts of the oity it was stated, in the most circumstantial way, that the autopsy had proved that Mr Hawkins was foully murdered, and even that a person, whose name was distinctly given, and his motive accounted for, had been arrested as the author of the deed. It was however untrue that any one had been taken into custody. An inquest was held to day, and shewed conclusively that Hawkins had been moat cruelly and fiendishly murdered, first being shot by bullet and slugs, and tbe body afterwards mutilated by dagger wounds in thirteen different places. ,*£The deceased gentleman’s wife, in evidence, stated that some time ago her husband was threatened by a man named Chsonis, on Italian, ths oauss being over a disputed the case now pending in the Court, The police asked for the inquest to baWF adjourned for a week, pending further evidence now being obtained. Tbs jury, on viewing the body, were horror struck at ths mutilated form before them.
