1 The above Council met yesterday afternoon. - Present! Councillor Clark (Chairman), Gray, ’ Coleman, Stubbs, Orr, Murphy, and King, t jseoMrtta connssroNMUcE. The Walmata Bond Board wrote, 'I In re- ■ ference to your circular requesting thia Board > to refrain from levying a general rate for thia i year, and the proposal you submitted therein, ■ I anj directed to reply conveying to you the I resolution of the Board, via., ‘That this • Board cannot see their way to agree to the proposal at present.’—H. McKay, Clerk." —Received’ The To Aral Road Board wrote forwarding a statement of account-;. The Wairoa County 'Council wrote asking the Council to join with them in again impressing upon the Government the desirability of having the unsurveyed portion of the road between Gisborne and Mahia surveyed, The Engineer estimated the cost of making the road at between £3OO to £4OO. It was agreed to join with the Wairoa Council in requesting the Government to survey the road, at onoe, A. Olsen wrote’applying for an extension of 1 time on his contract for clearing odt drains. ■ | The consideration of the request was de!f erred till the completion of the contract. The District Survey office wrote asking for information with reference to the Tologa Atikihf road and hoping that th* Department and Council would not clash in the matter [ They also gava their opinion us to the desir ‘ 1 (tbia way in whioh the money should be spent'

The Chairman proposed, and Cr Murphy seconded, that th* road be cleared of all slips. —Carried.

Tbe Patutahi Road Board wrote complaining of the cutting up of the roade in their district by th* dray* going to and from th* quarry. Cr King thought the Council should assist tha Board in making the necessary repair*. The Engineer considered the road was destroyed. On the motion of Cr Stubb* it was decided to grant £25 towards repairing the quarry road.

The Hutt County Council wrote suggesting that tha present Licensing Committee* should be abolished, and formed of tbe Borough and County Council*. Or King proposed that they adopt the suggestion of the Hutt Council. Cr Stubb* ssoonded tbe motion.—Carried.

R, O. Stewart, Waiapu, wrote asking the Council to lay off a road connecting the school with the main road.

The Engineer said he had been waiting for a warrant from the Government authorising him to lay off tbe road. The Ranger’s report was read. Or King stated that on the 29th April, be had to complain to the ranger about the largo number of cattle that wa* on tbe Wairoa road,

It was decided to request Mr Smith to pay up the balance due on th* dog collars. Tbe Engineer reported that Mr Monman had stopped the water course at Weorenga-a-kuri, and filled in some 8 feet, and had also put a culvert on top. Cr King proposed that if the maintenance Contracts were at all neglected, the Engineer should he authorised to employ such labor as he deems necessary, and charge the same against any money becoming due. Cr Wethered seconded.—Carried. Or Coleman asked that some grsyel be put on the Waimata-Ormond road forth* purpose of filling in the low place*, especially a) McLean's street.—Agreed to. It wa* also agreed to have the holes on the Mateahu road filled in.

Re Malone’s contract for 1000 yard* metal, Resolved to offer him 75 per cent on work completed, and that he abandon the contract. The Council retaining the 23 per cent ae far i liquidated damage*- Malone to have the option of completing the breaking of tfie stone now hauled out of the quarry. On going into the estimates for the ensuing year it was decided that no new work* be undertaken except in th* Taloga anfi Waiapu Ridings; that the rates this year ba devoted toward* maintenanoe, and absolutely necessary work*, and reducing the Bank liability. Cr Murphy got a schedule of works passed for Tologa Riding, but the consideration of all others was held over until the rate was struck. It appeared to be understood that a differential rate might be struck,

The amount accruing in the Tologa Riding foj 1889 is £550. ’ Owing to the Property fax valuation not having been supplied the Clerk was not ahi* to make out the Rate Roll. Resolved that £JOO be expended in continuing the Wainui Flat Road, and that it be charged against tfie Tolqg* *nfi Waiapu Riding*. It was decided to make a new crossing at the Kaiteratahi ford at a oost of £6O,
