iNVBBCABaiLL, Thursday. At the annual licensing meeting, held yesterday, the committee refused to renew the license to Mr Twentyman Wilson for the Melville Efotel, in consequence of certain facte disclosed in connection with a row that had occurred in the house. Mr Wilson had stated that a constable was implicated in the row, hut afterwards denied it in Court, and subsequently, at an inquiry made by the Inspector, he denied that the statement wqi untrue, or that it wu made to injure the constable. The committee allowed the a. licensees twenty one days’ adjournment to Mi enable him to sell out and a new applicant to be put forward. The committee had previously notified the holders of two hotels w that new buildings must be erected or tha licenses would be refused. This threat wu withdrawn, the committee admitting that business would not justify sqch an expen* ' dtture, ■ ' ■ . ■ i .” 1
THE TOLOGA LICENSING BENCH.
MR BROWN REFUSED A LICENSE.
The Tologa Licensing Bench sat on Thursday | Messrs J. Booth, Reeves, Stopford, and one native assessor, being on the banph. All the renewals applied for were granted,' An application for a license for a bouse on the Whataupoko, made by Mr J, Brown, was refused. Mr Booth stated that he had made enquiries and found that a public house was not required in that district. Mr Brown presented a largely signed petition in favor of a license being granted, but Mr Booth remarked that the Bench could hot taka any notice of petitions, they had only to consider whether the house was required or hot.
