The Oily Man from 'Frisco'

(TO THE EDITOR.] Sib,—So our “ only driller ”isto be with us once more, that is if the effort the Mararoa will have to make is not too great, if successful she ought to be named ' ‘ Maroro," as it takes something very strong to move Mr Weaver. Now, Sir, when your valuable paper informed us last month that the Sydney Board was negotiating with a local borer to prove the well, there was hardly a shareholder in Gisborne but was pleased that the period of inaction was likely to be succeeded by an honest attempt to prove the oil, and that the masterly inactivity which has governed the Company's operations for many months, would be succeeded by well-directed efforts to finish the well, and let the shareholders know its value, whatever the same may be. But, when we read “ Mr Weaver leaves Mararoa, A 0.," our hearts metaphorically sunk into our boots. What had caused this change of front ? Had the glib tongue of our “ oily friend," uncontradicted by any person able to speak as to facts, again prevailed over the better sense of the Sydney Board ? I will venture to affirm Mr Weaver would not get a vote of confidence in Gisborne again ; either by •• bluff," or the persuasive eloquence of his friends—if be has any. Has be come back to play " the same old game," travelling between the town and oil springs, at the Company's expense. Is he to be paid by the job, or the year ? It the latter, I for one will pay no more calls for his support,—l am, Ac., Ko TF. ABA TIKA TENA.
