Impending Libel Action.
Christchurch, last nigl t . Mr Somers, booksellerof Christchurch has instructed his solicitors to serve a writ on the Lyttelton Times for /2000, for publishing a Tirnaru telegram that MrSomers urged Mr Woller, of Timaru, to commit arson. The writ will be served to morrow. Woller’s statement was made before the Assignee in Bankruptcy,
Ths telegram referred to above reads: — ‘Timaru, Friday,— At a meeting of the creditors of O. W. Woller and Co., stationers, J. Woller swore that 0. Sommers, of Christ, church, made a proposal on the 17th of April to fire tho premises, and showed him how to do. it. Sommers had an interest In the building." If Sommers can wring £2OOO out of the Times for publishing that he will succeed better than most people do in New Zealand. When a scandalous verdict was a short time back given against the N.Z. Herald the Times (perhaps unintentionally) miorepresented facts to show that the Herald had been justly treated, and that the law of libel was a near approach to perfection : possibly tho Times will now change its tune.
