New York, June 9.

The latest returns of the loss of life by the Johnstown catastrophe is thirty seven thousand.

This is based on the fact that 13,000 survivors have registered their names, while the estimated population of the district affected (in Covenmaugh Valley) is 50,000. It is feared that all the rest have lost their lives.

It is estimated that fully ten thousand laborers will be employed a month in clearing away the wreckage caused by the floods at Johnstown. About two million dollars have already been subscribed for the purchase of food for the survivors.
