The weights for the Melbourne Cup are due on the 24th inst,

It is stated that Patsy Butler has been offered £2OOO for Manton. He however refused to sell at that figure. The Australian bred horse Ringmaster, who i* now entered for the Ascot Royal Hunt Cup, has been handicapped at Bst Bib. He is now favorite for the race. The fastest time on record for the English Derby is 2min 43secs. This time has been beaten in several of the Victorian Derbies. There is very little wagering going on at present over the New Zealand Cup. In Dunedin the books are writing Chain Shot, he being backed pretty freely at 100 to 7. _ The Napier Park Racing Club still continua to show a better increase, for last year they only received 48 nominations, whereas this year they have received 88 nominations for their winter meeting. The question*now being asked are :—What will Carbine's weight be for the next Melbourne Cup ? Will the handicapper give him as much a* Archer carried to victory in 1889, via., lOat alb 1 Expert* have been for many years puzzling their brains In order to invent a horseshoe capable of being affixed to the hoof without nails. For a long time their efforts were almost in vain, but a year or so ago a few enthusiastic gentlemen took up the question, and as the result of their joint labors they have produced a shoe which appears to be a complete success, The shoo is attached by a single steel band which passes round the hoof, well below the coronet. This is kept in position by means of a pillar affixed to the front of the shoe, which cannot by any possibility slip off, as the band mentioned is firmly secured at the sides by small iron studs. Many advantages are claimed for the shoe. For military purposes it is simply invaluable. No forge is requited with which to put it on, and anyone with the slightest knowledge of horses can readily fix it whilst cold. It may be thought that the dost of the new shoe is much higher than that of the old one, but this is not the case, the price if anything being lower, whilst it is Baid the shoe will last a week or so longer. The following final payments for the Hawke's Bay Btaeplschate appeared in the Napier papers of Monday test Chemist I2.fi, Orient 11.8, Oddfellow 10.10, Premium JO.O.

Orlando 10.0, Panic 9.7, Glencoe 9.7, Waterfad 9.6, Ariel 9 4, and Jubilee 9.2. The Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club ai-e to be congratulated upon the large field left in for the Hawke'* Bay Steeplechase, to be run on Thursday (to day) at Hastings. The whole ten for whom final payments have been made are sterling .animals. Oddfellow won the last Wanganui steepleebase, Orient and Glencoe finishing seooed and third respectively on the same occasion. Chemist, who is top weight, won the Napier Steeplechase and the Hawke's Bay Steeplechase last year, carrying in the latter race only 21b. less than his present impost, beating Mangaohane (list 51b). Premium is known as a good hurdler, and makes his first appearance as a steeplechaser. He won the two hurdle races at the Napier Park Racing Club’* last meeting. The remaining five horses are in capital condition, and with fine weather an interesting contest is certain.—H- B. Herald.
