Tbe steeplechase meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club was held on the Hastings course on Thursday last. The attendance was large, and the various events were keenly contested, notwithstanding the rough nature of the course. The totalizators were well patronised throughout the day, and paid over some fairly good dividends, the largest being £l7 17s on Jubilee in the Consolation. Appended are the results :— Maiden Steeplechase—Defamer l.Porotowa 2, Onslow 3. Won easily. Dividends, £2 5s and £1 19s.
La lies’ Bracelet—Melrose 1, Emerald 2, Rob Roy 3. Won by about two lengths. Dividends, £l6 10s and £lO Ba. At the conclusion of the race tbe winner was led on to the lawn, and the bracelet * presented to the lady who nominated him.
Hawks's Bay Sthbflechase Handicap of 800 sovs ; second horse to receive 50 sovs and third horse 20 sovs from the stake ; about 3} miles. Mr E. McElwaine’s Oddfellow, 10.10, (J. Redmond) 1 Mr F. B. Gentry’s Orient, 11.3, (owner) 2 Mr A, Effingham's Chemist, 12 3 (owner) 3 —Premium, Ariel, Orlando, Panic, Jubilee, and Waterfall also started ; Glencoe being scratched.
This was the event of the day. Waterfall was the favorite on the machine, while little Chemist had a good many admirers. At the fall of the flag Ariel at once went to the front and took the jump opposite the grandstand in splendid style, Waterfall baulking, much to the disgust of his numerous backers. After going about a quarter of a mile in grand style Ariel went off the course proper on to the wrong track, and proceeded some distance before being pulled up, thus losing all chance of the race. On the second time round Premium came io grief, nearly opposite tbe stand, thus leaving Oddfellow, Orient, and Chemist to fight the finish out. On rounding the railway bend Chemist was at the head of affairs, and looked all over a winner, but the weight now began to tell a tale, and the game little son of The Painter had to succumb to Oddfellow and Orient, the former winning a grand race by a length. Time: 8 mins 4 secs. Dividends, £6 Is and £7 7s, The general opinion seemed to be that Ariel's rider (Smith) was not properly acquainted with the course, for had the horse gone straight the Poverty Bay representative would have been a hard nut to crack when it camo to the final struggle. Selling Steeplechase— Tikirere I, Onslow 2, Reforms. Won by two lengths. Dividends, £2 12s and £2 ss. Time : 3 mins. 83} secs. Consolation Handicap—Jubilee, 9.0, 1; Panic, 9.0, 2. Orlando 11.4, and Ariel 9.5, also started. Ariel was the favorite, and was heavily backed on the machine. At the fall of the flag Ariel again went to tbe front, negotiating bis jumps in beautiful style; after going once round ho made for the stone wall, jumped it, and disappeared from view, not showing up until after the winners had weighed out. Il is freely stated that had Redmond had the mount on Artel he would have had .'ory little difficulty in putting down both Facte and Jubilee, The winner pud a tlividwd el £1717a and £l5 6s.
