The political position in New South Wales, in regard to which our Sydney correspondent has kept our readers well informed, is or should be a subject of much importance to. New Zealand. The contending parties which support Freetrade and Protection, respectively, are now equalised in strength, and it is evident that this state of things cannot long continue without another general election. What the result of euch an election would be is of course at the present time only a matter of speculation, but all parties seem agreed that another general election is inevitable, and the probabilities are that the cause of Protection will gain the day. It does not matter, in the discussion of this question, what our opinions may be on the principle of Protection as applied to New Zealand, but when it is New South Wales that is to be experimented upon quite a different phase is given to the question. Protection in that country means a great loss to producers in New Zealand, because the rates of duty that would be imposed would form a great obstacle to the trade between the two countries. Of course we only look at the question from a New Zealander's point of view, and what has to be said on that side is just what would be considered by the other side as the strongest grounds In favor of Protection. It is, at any rate, advisable that our farmers should watoh closely the course of events in New South Wales, which has proved such a good market tor their produce.
