FOOTBALL.
The Hawke's Bay football team match against Canterbury in on Saturday afternoon. The game of the fastest and most interesting that have been played here for a long time. Canterbury had the beat of the game needy all through, but the good defence of the Hawke’s Bay backs prevented scoring, and eventually the Hawke’s Bay won by one goal to one try. The Maori footballers played Otago on Saturday, the former winning by 11 points to 8. The brilliant passing of the Natives and the machine like form In which they played, seemed to have dispirited Otago from the start, and they appeared thoroughly demoralised, though they warmed up somewhat in the second spell. About 4000 spectators were present. The takings amounted to £205. The football match between the Gymnasium and the Turangsnul Club was played on Saturday afternoon, and resulted in the former winning by 3 pointe to 2. Crawford, for the Gymnasium, secured a try, which Staito converted into a goal. Branson and Maude secured the two tries for the Club.
