POLITICAL NOTES.
THE LATEST FROM THE HOUSE, Wbldwotox, 1-st night The Government had a victory of fonr on a division over the Hislop-Ward affair. Messrs Graham and Carroll, both of whom are disgusted at the turn things have taken, voted with the Government. An amendment to the Property Assessment Bill was moved by Mr Moss on Friday night, That the Property Tex is unfair in Its incidence, harassing in Its effects, and injurious to the progress ot the cloony, is regarded by the Opposition as most likely to be carried. They count upon 42 votes certain, while Government have only 87 certain votes, others being doubtful. On the other hand Government claim they can detect the amendment by five or six votes at least. Members will of course treat the amendment as a motion ot no confidence. For several cessions the Otago Harbor Board have preferred before Parliamentary committees a claim tor lands taken for railway purposes. This year the petition was referred to the A. to L. branch ot the petitions Committee, who have decided to reoom* mend that £4500 bo paid to the Boird.
