The Christchurch Cruelty Case.

Chbistchubch, last night. At the Police Court to-day Abbott and his wife, charged with illtreating and starv • ing Esther Powdrick, wore brought up on remand. A great crowd gathered in and around the Court. Esther Powdrick, 13| years, deposed that the Abbotts had constantly maltreated and starved her. She had been kept as long as three days without food. Her food was generally wheaten meal. When she was kept without food Mrs Abbott tied her up. Once, when she went to a neighbor to complain, on returning Mrs Abbott plunged her head into a bucket of water and kept it there. The case was remanded.
