Mahon, secretary of the Hospital Committee and Master of the Refuge, died suddenly at the Hospital thia afternoon, having poisoned himself, but whether accidentally or by design is not known. At a meeting of the rreditors of Major Slingeby Bell this morning Messrs W. H. Cooper and Thomas Sidey were appointed supervisors. The bankrupt was granted his furniture to the extent of £4OO, and an ah lewanee of £5 per week for two months, to be Continued afterwards should the Assignee require his servicer. The Borough Council on Wednesday night voted to Mayor Swan, now in Dunedin, £lOO for the current year, with congratulations for his relection to the office, and expressions of regret that the Borough finances did not permit a more adequate recognition of his services. Messrs Nelson Broe, have received the following message in reference to the London market Mutton—best quality, 4|d. Beef—hind, 8?d; fores, 3|d, ' At' tire inquest bn the body of J. Mahon, at the. Hospital thia ' afternpop, the evidence showed tpst he had been much harassed id>9iit the Ah Tack affair, and had taken to drinking, He was unable to sleep, and remained in the Hospital on Wednesday night, walking about the place instead of going home, and ultimately fook Bomb morphia in brandy, with the View of getting to sleep. ‘ A glass containing the remains of brandy and morphia was found where he left it. When Dr Menzies 'entered the Hospital yesterday morning the deceased seemed to be buffering from the effects of 'drink. The jury returned a verdict of accidental death through taking an overdose of morphia while under influence of liquor, Deceased leaves a wife and several children. His life was insured tor £3OO in the Mutnal Provident.
