Saturday, January 11, 1890. ANARCHISTS.
Be just and fear not; Let all the ends thou aim’st at bo thy country’s, Thy God’s, and truth’s.
THOSE Auckland people who term themselves Unionists ought to be highly gratified with the notice that has been taken of them by that political weathercock Mr Joseph Chamberlain, and it will no doubt be esteemed a great favor by colonists to be told by Mr Chamberlain that we are all loyal, and that the doctrines of anarchy have found no footing amongst us. If we take the logical application of Mr Chamberlain’s words, it is that those who are not what he terms Unionists, are anarchists. As the Premier, Sir George Grey, and most of our leading men, are in favor of Home Rule for Ireland, they must, according to Mr Chamberlain, be anarchists. And to be told this by a person of Mr Chamberlain’s political antecedents, gives point to the illustration. We remember quite well of a so-called “Unionist” meeting held in Auckland some months ago, when a few persons, whose duty it is to espouse the cause of Chris- | tianity, took up a bigoted position, and made all kinds of aspersions about Home Rule. It did not seem to occur to them : that their own religion would in no way i be made better than what it was, simply I because they choose to heap abuse upon | those who imagine there is another and i equally good road to heaven. A short time after that the opinion of the Auckland people was expressed in a very "different tone. When Sir George Grey, an ardent Home Ruler, got up to speak, the audience rose from their seats and showed other marks cf respect which proved that the declamation of religious faction had made little impression on them. They were prepared to, hear the question discussed on principle, and were in no humor to countenance an attempt to create another fof those religious feuds from which the cause of Christianity has itself suffered so much. It is amusing now to hear of such persons being termed anarchists. New Zealand appears to have done very well when it is considered that so many “anarchists” are contained within her boundaries, and we think the great majority of the people of the colony would prefer to remain under the ban of a political weathercock’s displeasure rather than give tolerance to Pigott affairs. . It is not very creditable to Auckland that there should be such an attempt to distort the truth as there appears to have been. It cannot be much encouragement to a party fighting the losing battle that Mr Chamberlain’s party is, to have the position of affairs misrepresented, and for the sake of their own cause the few Auckland busybodies who communicated with him ought at least to have confined themselves to the truth. The great success which has attended the mission of the delegates gives ample proof that those who communicated with Mr Chamberlain were wanting in accuracy. Certainly we admit colonists are loyal, and heartily wish that the great Empire we have inherited may remain intact, but we look at it in a much broader light than Mr Chamberlain does.
