THE RAILWAY RETURNS.
The satisfactory returns for the railways for the past eight months are partially indicative of the promising turn things have taken, but the good result is also attributable to the efficient management since the lines have been in the hands of Commissioners. For . the eight months ending December of last year the net profit was ,£24,619 more than it was for the whole twelve months in the year preceding. The traffic is certain to be well maintained during the next few months, and the Commissioners ought to have a highly satisfactory statement to make at the end of the financial term. Of course there will not be the enormous grain traffic, but there is reason to believe that the Commissioners will be able to do their work efficiently, and that the rail ways will in future be a substantial source of income, and not a grievous burden upon the taxpayers. If the people can now keep down the political jobs that are always ripening there is a very good prospect before the country,
