The Harbor Works.

THE CLEARING UP PROCESS. After years of hopes and disappointments, and of a continued exercise of local feeling, the harbor works ceased on Saturday last—at any rate ceased so far as Mr Thomson, the Engineer, is concerned. About four o'clock most of the men had been given the walking ticket, while some few were in doubts as to whether they would be required again on Monday, Everywhere the clearing up process was visible. Things were being got into a settled condition in the workshops; the ponderous machinery lying idle, a silent testimony to the turn things had taken. A good stock of blocks remained in the yard and several trucks loaded with metal were on the line on the viaduct. At the end of the pier the final touches were just being put on the laet notion, while the training wall had been deserted by workmen, four or five irregular looking piles in the advanced portion of the work appearing as sentinels doing guard over the wall proper. A number of children were enjoying themselves clambering round the structure, when one unfortunate fell in and disappeared from sight in the rapid etream. But he shot up again almost instantly, and one of his playmates grasped him as he was being carried down the stream. The thing happened so quickly that scarcely anyone noticed it from the other side of the river, and it was observed by no adult sufficiently near to give assistance.
