COLONIAL TELEGRAMS.

NAPIER. Last night. A public meeting was held here this afternoon, nnder the auspices of tbe Chamber of Commerce, to consider a series of resolutions having for their object tho promotion of immigration of a class of persons suitable for settlement upon the lands of the colony. Resolutions co the following effect were moved by Mr Ormond, and adoptedincrease of population is essential to the progress of the colony. Government should acquire from the native owners as muoh as possible of the large estate held by them, estimated at twelve million acres, most of which is lying waste. Provision should be made for expediting the opening up of Crown lands for settlement, and there should be such amendments as will prevent the delay and uncertainty attending the present system. That steps be taken to encourage the introduction of farmers from Great Britain, with capital, to settle on the land, facilities being given to that class of people to form special settlements. To assist the Agent-General emigration bureaus should bo established ia Great Britain. —A copy of the resolutions was ordered to be sent to Government. AUCKLAND.
