The Gisborne Standard AND COOK COUNTY GAZETTE. Published every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday Morning.

Saturday, June 14, 1890. THE FORESHORE QUESTION.

Be just and fear not; Let all the ends thou aim’st at be thy country’s, Thy God’s, and truth’s.

As was only to be expected the Harbor Board refused to rescind the motion dealing with the foreshore question. The Board having gone so far without consulting the Borough Council it might just as well go the whole porcine animal, and face out the action already taken. Where it is a member of the Board that is concerned, and when it is remembered that that member stirred the matter up from the beginning, even ratepayers who cannot be said to be cautious may be tempted to ask as to why latterly there has been sb much haste in the affair. The Borough Council has at any rate acted very res' pectfully in the matter, and is now quite at liberty to take stronger measures. The arguments used in favor of granting the application are amusing in the extreme. The fact that a mistake may possibly have been already committed is considered a very good reasos;for trying to perpetuate the error, and the Borough ratepayers are now twitted with the assertion that the matter was before them some weeks, and no objection was raised. It is not also pointed out that in this the ratepayers paid to the Board a compliment of which it now appears to be undeserving—that of supposing the members would never commit such an absurdity as to offer to lease a portion of the foreshore just above the bridge for twenty and odd pounds 1

The people on the Whataupoko and Kaiti sides of the river ought to have something to say about the question so far as the opening of the bridges is concerned, as they have only to think of the inconvenience they will be put to in order to gain an idea as to how they would be affected in the matter.

The Borough Council has wisely decided to take prompt action, and a meeting is called for Monday to discuss the question.
